New Primalec USX ultrasonic technology makes the inaudible audible

Newly announced on Stand A98 at the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Exhibition is Primalec USX ultrasonic technology for location of leakage in pressurised or evacuated (vacuum) systems, for early detection of mechanical or lubrication failure in bearings, gearboxes or other rotating mechanical equipment before significant damage is done and for detecting electrical discharge caused by failing insulation.

Small leakages of gases (or air) from pressurised systems, or of air into a system that should hold a vacuum, emit sound at very high (ultrasonic) frequencies that cannot be heard by the human ear. The Primalec USX converts the inaudible ultrasonic frequencies to audible sound, and enables you to hear them through the top-quality earphones that come as part of the kit. Move the probe around and you soon find where the leak is happening.

In mechanical systems, bearing failures or wear on shafts (for example) emit ultrasonic sound as evidence of a fault developing long before the problem gets bad enough to emit audible sound. The Primalec USX converts the inaudible ultrasonic sound from the mechanical device to audible sound. By listening to the earphones as you position the probe at vulnerable points you will quickly isolate exactly where there is a problem, in plenty of time to do something about it without a major breakdown.

Insulation failure in electrical circuitry often causes arcing or electrical discharge, particularly in humid atmospheres. Sometimes such discharges are bad enough to see, if the site of the discharge is in bad light or darkness. But in most cases the discharge is small, the light is bright, and there is no audible sound from it. However, there is always ultrasonic sound emitted by such discharges, and with Primalec USX to convert the inaudible ultrasonic sound to audible sound, you can hear and trace the problem or problems. Insulation failures cause fire, or damage to valuable equipment, so having the right ultrasonic sound detection available can save a fortune – even lives.
